Lifestyle

Norway is known for their good quality of life. The country consistently scores well in the annual Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Better Life Index. Indeed, Norwegians are ahead of most in the subjective well being, recreational life, environmental quality, health status and social connections. All of this bodes well for the western expat living in Norway. It’s also a safe country and, happily, an estimated 90% of the locals speak English. This makes retail shopping, working with government entities and general navigation easy for English speaking visitors.

Cost of Living

The high quality of life in Norway does not come cheap for the expatriate. Indeed, Oslo is recognized as one of the most expensive cities in the world. According to Xpatulator.com’s July 2016 report, the cost of living in Norway far exceeds the international average. This becomes very apparent when one purchases any number of goods and services such as a household accommodation and furnishings, transport (including petrol), utilities, healthcare, Internet plan, clothing, groceries, alcohol, restaurant meal and retail recreational actives. If a western expat desires to relocate to Norway and enjoy all its splendor, they are encouraged to negotiate a generous compensation plan that is commensurate with the local living expenses.

Climate

Norway has a varied climate. It is influenced by the Gulf Stream which makes the climate milder than expected especially at the west coast, but rain and wind dominate throughout the year. The north coast is colder than the west but only by a few degrees. Further inland Norway experiences a more continental climate with snowy winters and mild summers.
Visa Restrictions

Although Norway is not a full member of the EU it is a member of the single market and so EU citizens have the right to live and work in Norway . You will however need to register with the local authorities once you have been in the country for three months.
Non EU Citizens will require a Visa and Work Permit to live in Norway. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration has an excellent website that will help you understand the documents and processes required to enter Norway. More information is available here…
