Leopardfish  Country Guide

Luxembourg has repeatedly scored well in the annual prestigious Mercer Quality of Life Survey and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Better Life Index. The country ranks higher than most in its subjective well-being, health status and environmental quality. Without question, this small wealthy country (which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site) has much to offer the international expatriate. Benefits of living in Luxembourg include a top not notch communications infrastructure, a first-rate mass transit system, an extremely rich cultural life, minimal government corruption, little crime and a platinum cosmopolitan experience. More good news for the western expat is that English is taught in Luxembourg schools and is commonly understood by locals. This makes retail shopping and overall navigation easy for the international visitor.

Cost of Living

Cost of living

Xpatulator’s July 2016 reports that while Luxembourg is just slightly more expensive than its Western European neighbors, it’s cost of living is dramatically higher than the international average. This become apparent when one purchases any number of goods and services such as housing accommodations and furnishings, transport, clothing, alcohol, groceries, restaurant meals and retail recreational and entertainment activities. If a western expat desires to relocate to Luxembourg, they are encouraged to diligently negotiate a generous compensation package that reflects the local living costs.

As it is a small country Luxembourg does not really experience regional differences in climate. The summers are mild with temperatures of between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. Autumn, which runs from September to November, skies are usually gray, and the weather is wet, rainy, and windy and the temperature drops to an average of about 6 degrees. Cold weather and gales can be found in winter with temperatures from 0 to 5 degrees. With the emergence of spring temperature rises of between 6 and 18 degrees Celsius can be enjoyed.

Visa Restrictions

Visa Restrictions

If you are a European Union National you have the entitlement to work in any European Union member country without needing to obtain a work permit. The only exception to this is if you are planning to work in Croatia where some restrictions can apply. However you should still investigate the consequences of working and the effect this will have on your benefits (health insurance, maternity/paternity, pensions, occupational accidents and diseases, death grants, unemployment, early retirement, family benefits), and the implications of where and how much tax you pay. The European Union offers this Tax advise at its Your Europe website. Once you have been in an EU country for more than 3 months you will be required to register your residence and obtain a residency permit.

If you are not a European Union National then you will require a work permit. The requirements for this often differ depending on your Nationality. For the latest up to date information for entry please visit the Guichet website.
