CfBT Schools

Schools in Brunei vary widely in terms of size, age, location and state of repair, from the very modern to those in some need of renovation. Primary and most secondary schools have teaching in the morning only but a few secondary schools have over 2,000 students who are split into two shifts, morning and afternoon. Most secondary schools, however, are around 1,000. Primary schools usually have around 300-400 students, although some have as few as 100, or as many as 1,000. It should be noted that you could be posted by CfBT to any school, on either morning or afternoon shift. However, we always consider your individual preferences when making the posting decision.
A secondary school is run by a Principal, who is usually Bruneian, assisted by two Deputy Principals. There is a fairly standard hierarchy below that of Senior Teachers and Heads of Departments. In primary schools there is a Head Teacher (Guru Besar) who is usually assisted by a Deputy, although this depends on the size of the school.
In secondary schools, there can be up to 5 or 6 CfBT teachers. In primary schools, there is usually only one CfBT teacher, who may also be the only expatriate in the school.

How to Apply

To be eligible you must meet the requirements of the Brunei Ministry of Education –

Interview Process

To begin the application process, you need to apply via the website

You will be asked to upload the required documents to your profile. The interview is conducted by a panel consisting of one of our Education Project Managers (EPMs), a CfBT Brunei HR representative, and a representative from the Brunei MoE who usually sits in to hear the interview and make notes. If you are successful you will be placed on an eligibility list which is valid for one year. Please note that although we can conduct the interview, the official outcome won’t be known until all of the required documents have been submitted. The outcome is jointly decided by CfBT and MoE and is normally released within two weeks of the interview.

School Resources In primary there are class sets of graded phonic readers in each school issued by the Curriculum Development Department (CDD). For Pra, CDD has produced thematic posters and flashcards that align with the syllabus units. In addition, there is a wide range of teaching materials that have been developed by our teachers. Some of these are distributed during your Induction Programme while others can be accessed on the CfBT intranet.
In secondary, there are core textbooks produced by CDD for each syllabus which are issued to every student. CfBT has also produced many support resources over time and these are also available in schools or from CfBT.
In three of the four districts of Brunei, there is an Education Centre, with a fairly extensive stock of books, magazines, videos etc. as well as photocopying facilities. As resourcing levels vary from school to school each teacher has an annual photocopying allowance which can be used in the Education Centres.
Schools vary in the amount of technology available to teachers. An increasing number of schools now have interactive whiteboards and data projectors in classrooms, though some do not have these yet. Schools usually have an ICT room but it usually needs to be booked in advance by teachers. Access to the Internet or WiFi also varies and may not be available at all schools.
Line management There are six Education Project Managers (EPMs), including a Head of Primary and a Head of Secondary, who are responsible for the line management of all CfBT teachers. Teacher performance is ascertained through a variety of means such as Advisory Lesson Visits,
Walkthrough lesson visits, Formal Lesson Observations, Performance Review Meetings, target setting and feedback from school leaders. Teacher classroom performance is assessed against the Brunei Teaching Standards (BTS) and the Teacher Performance Appraisal (TPA), both of which are criteria based.

CfBT Brunei’s English Language Teaching contract with the Ministry of Education was awarded in 1985 with 15 teachers and has been expanding since. We currently deploy and manage 200 English specialists. By working in close collaboration with our key partner, the Brunei Ministry of Education, we deliver excellence in education to our key beneficiaries; the students of Brunei Darussalam.

Our aim is to raise the proficiency and attainment levels of Bruneian students through high impact teaching and learning, through targetted national support and intervention programmes, and through the continuous building of our own and local capacity across most primary and secondary schools and Sixth Form Colleges, in Brunei.
Our focus is to support and extend the quality of education by placing qualified, expert teachers in government schools to deliver innovative 21st century teaching, engaging students to become proficient English language speakers and dynamic learners.
We use data to design and deliver tailored intervention and student support programmes. We also support capacity building through formal and informal continuing professional development; from national and cluster workshops to school-based Professional Learning Communities.
Teachers are employed by CfBT and are provided with comprehensive professional and personal support for the duration of their contracts. On arrival, teachers participate in a two-week professional induction programme before officially starting in their schools. The induction programme ensures that all teachers are fully prepared to take up their professional roles and responsibilities, and further, provides assistance with immigration, banking, driving, housing and telecommunications.
We work closely with our partner, the Ministry of Education, on strategic and best-fit placement of our teachers to ensure successful placements. Once in post, CfBT teachers work alongside their colleagues on a day-to-day basis and report to their Heads of Department and school principals, however, all our teachers are line-managed by CfBT Education Project Managers (EPMs) who provide wide ranging professional support through formal and informal school visits, discussions and feedback. Our performance management systems are robust, supportive and ensure continuing professional growth through learning, leading and development opportunities. We are committed to ensuring success.

What do you like most about Brunei?

The people, the food, the lifestyle. The people are friendly and accommodating, they are just as curious about your culture as you are of theirs. Food is the star of the show here in Brunei, for any formal, informal event there is a massive feast with a variety of dishes, I still have more to test out! The lifestyle here is very relaxed, nothing is too much trouble, the amount of time I get to spend with my little one has doubled.
Please describe where you live.
I live in a district called Temburong which is cut off from Brunei by Malaysia although this isolation is set to end in 2020 with the opening of a new bridge. How this will affect life in Temburong remains to be seen. I am, for now, privileged to live in a tract of some of the last untouched rainforest on earth…something future generations might see only in books. I am no great naturalist or botanist, but still enjoy getting out into the fresh air and greenery as much as possible. My actual house is the best housing I have been provided with in over twenty years of teaching abroad
Please describe a typical working day.
In a typical day, I teach both O level English and IGCSE English classes. On average I have three or four classes a day. I arrive by 7:15 am and teach until 12:30 pm and then have until 2 pm for other work, planning etc. What school do you teach at? Described what the local students ad teachers are like
I teach at Sekolah Rendah Sungai Liang. I have one Yr1 Class, and two PRA classes. The teachers at my school are like any other staff I would find back home in NZ. They are happy to assist with translating, they share what they got up to on the weekends, their holidays, their family news. My principal is much like my previous NZ principal, leading by example and always focused on the students. The students again are like any other 5-8 year olds, some full of mischief, some very studious, and some very relaxed about life. They are sweet and will dish out high fives when they leave my classroom, I’ve even had a few “I love you Teacher Tracy” it’s wonderful that they feel excited to see me, and enjoy their lessons.
How does teaching in Brunei compare to home? (e.g. discipline, teaching hours, admin load, etc)
There’s actually no comparison when it comes to time. I would drop my daughter off at 7am and pick her up at 4.30, sometimes 5.30pm from Daycare. This did not sit well with me. My time teaching/planning/ staff meetings/ PD has halved. When it comes to admin, smart planning, planning at school when you have free periods, works well for me, even when I stay back a few times a week, I still manage to get home at around 2pm. Every now and then I will get a surprise message that there is a meeting that day or something needs to be handed in pronto to the management team, which initially was a bit bewildering, however you just put your flexible hat on and get on with it.
What do you do in your free time?
I jog every day off and running through uninterrupted greenery with my favourite music playing is really good. I also go on long walks. It must be understood though, that Temburong does not offer the diversions available to one in KB or Bandar, and for a person to be successful here one needs to be self-sufficient and to have one’s own interests. I love literature and have really enjoyed the opportunity to read many of the great masterpieces that I might otherwise have missed…although my amazon bill is killing me!
What do you do in your holidays?
Usually travel somewhere in South East Asia. We have explored Java and Bali in Indonesia; we went volcano trekking, waterfall walking, canyoneering, snorkelling in marine parks and haggling in the markets! We have experienced cave and jungle trekking in eastern and western Borneo, also visiting the orangutan sanctuaries. We have had beach holidays in the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand, combining it with some more active pursuits. City holidays are easily taken as well, with Singapore and Kuala Lumpur a short flight away.
What is healthcare like in Brunei?
Absolutely fantastic.  I have had a few health problems over the years and I have had no complaints about the care I have received.  CfBT were very supportive and the paperwork was so easy. The insurance we have through CfBT covers so much.  We are lucky to have it.  Whether you go to the local hospital or the private hospital – you will get the care you need.
Please describe how you get from place to place (transportation in Brunei)
Always by car. The public transportation is not that extensive so all teachers pretty much get around by car. Gas is cheap here. CfBT does provide an initial free loan to get a car and also gives a period of free rental until you get your own car. I was quite pleasantly surprised when, on my first evening in Brunei, I was given the keys to a rental car as well as a sim card for a phone.
What advice do you have for teachers who are thinking about moving to Brunei?
Come, enjoy, have a good time. People are easy to get along with and friendly. There may be a few odd things from home that are a bit difficult to find but most things can be found if you ask around. If it’s not in stores most things can be gotten online. If there is something in particular from home that is a big creature comfort perhaps enquire before you came and pack it, but in general I haven’t had many issues not being able to find what I want.
