Lifestyle

Lifestyle

Given the recent instability and violence, Ukraine is most certainly not a destination for the fainthearted expat. However, if one is adventurous and willing to live with some additional risk, then perhaps this country is still an option. Of course, the Crimean Peninsula is off limits and expats wanting to reside in such areas as Odesa, Luhansk, Donetsk and Kharkiv are recommended to keep a low profile. It should also be noted that crime is high almost everywhere in Ukraine and police corruption is extensive. This at times mitigates against the enforcement of law and order. Also, given the county’s struggle with intense racist attitudes, expats that are of African or Asian descent, should pause and consider this before relocating to Ukraine.

Cost of Living

Cost of living

Residing in Ukraine is good on the western expatriate’s budget. Indeed, according to Xpatulator’s July 2016 report, the cost of living is well below the international average. This becomes apparent when one purchases any number of goods and services in Ukraine such as a transport, healthcare, furniture and appliances, personal care item, an Internet plan, groceries, restaurant meals, alcohol and local retail recreation. Assuming that a teaching expat negotiates a fair remuneration with their new international school employer, they should be able to both live comfortably in Ukraine (fully exploiting all the wonderful things that it has to offer) as well as save some money.
