While Turkmenistan may offer the expat an adventurous and exotic experience, there are certain things that he or she will need to consider before applying for a visa. First, if you are not a Muslim, be very cautious. This country’s government is not very tolerant of religious minorities, particularly the kind that speak publicly about their faith. Secondly, single expat males should be careful not fall into a relationship with a local woman. The penalties are severe for this. Third, Turkmenistan is in an active seismic zone. Fourth, locals speak Turkmen not English. This may make shopping and navigating a bit more complicated from time to time. Fifth, infrastructure is in severe disrepair. This makes driving difficult in a number of areas throughout the country. Sixth, Turkmenistan has one of the most corrupt governments in the world. This may result in the expat having to pay a bribe or two along the way. Still, this country does have its alluring aspects: real dinasaur footprints (no kidding), lots of beautiful carpets, a distinctive and one of a kind culture, friendly people, Roman ruins and a stunningly wild and rugged landscape. Read more..

A number of services are quite reasonable and commensurate to what an expat might pay in many western locations such as household accommodations as well as various types of recreation and cultural activities. Still, restaurant meals, alcohol, Internet service and hotels are all more pricey.
