Leopardfish  Country Guide

While Palestine is certainly not for the faint-hearted, it most assuredly will not disappoint the adventure seeker, the social activist or the historian. The West Bank is a unique place on Earth and is a hub of archaeological ruins and Christian and Islamic places of worship and shrines. It encompasses East Jerusalem, ancient Ephraim and Nablus, Hebron, Bethlehem and Jericho. While much of rural and small town Palestine is rustic and its people traditional, it’s political center, Ramallah, is a surprisingly cosmopolitan enclave with nice hotels, trendy restaurants, outdoor cafes and a burgeoning middle class. English is also widely spoken. Of course, Palestine has its challenges. An Israeli wall surrounds most of it’s perimeter and has separated Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank. One also needs to travel through checkpoints to enter and leave the West Bank. This is an unpleasant experience for locals and expats alike. There are also Israeli military incursions into the West Bank from time to time which can pose a great danger to expats who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Other than that, Palestine is a very safe place and violent crime is almost non-existent. A western international can expect a warm embrace by the Palestinian people. They love visitors.

Cost of Living

Cost of living

Overall, costs vary greatly in the West Bank. Living outside of Ramallah is usually inexpensive while residing in Ramallah (which is home to most of the international community) is more expensive. There, expatriates can anticipate more western prices, albeit still more reasonable than in a number of their home countries. Generally speaking, according to’s July 2016 report, the cost of living in Palestine is about at the international average. So, assuming the school remuneration is fair, the expat teacher should be able to enjoy the exotic while living comfortably in Palestine.

Overall Palestine enjoys a pleasant climatic situation. Summer, although hot,  benefits from a gentle Mediterranean breeze with the evenings being cool, sometimes requiring a sweater. Daytime temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius. Winter temperatures can fall to zero with occasional rain.
