Kazakhstan is a land of contrasts. It offers the adventurous backpacking expatriate unspoiled nature replete with rugged mountainous ranges and and expansive wildernesses. For the more urbane expatriate, Kazakhstan includes the vibrant and pluralistic cities of Astana and Almaty full of western comforts in the form of fine restaurants, malls and recreational opportunities. Kazakhstan is also a fairly safe location (with the exception of petty crime). However, shopping retail or navigation could be problematic from time to time for the expat because many locals cannot speak English. Also, since a super majority of the population practice Islam, expats should act conservatively in public and make every effort not to offend local Muslims.
Living in won’t break the budget. In fact, the well compensated western expatriate should be able to save money while living there. According to Xpatulator.com’s July 2016 analysis, the cost of living in Kazakhstan is below the international average. This becomes evident when one purchases any number of goods and services such as groceries and restaurant meals, Internet plans, transport, alcohol and a number of other items. Not all is cheap in Kazakhstan, however. Housing accommodations and furnishings, clothing and recreation tend to be more pricey. Still, on balance, the western expat will likely find this to be a location where he or she will be able to live comfortably and get ahead financially.
The climate in Kazakhstan is markedly continental with cold winters countrywide. All four seasons can be experienced in Kazakhstan. With the exception of the southern region, the country has a continental climate with an average temperature of between -4 and -19 degrees Celsius in January and 19 to 26 degrees in July. Although winter temperatures can plummet as low as – 45 degrees Celsius and rise in summer time to 30 degrees Celsius. The weather in autumn is stable and lasts from September through November. The springtime is short and changeable and runs from April to May.
A visa is required by foreign nationals if they wish to visit or work in Kazakhstan. Further details of the requirements can be found on the The Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. This site also specifies what documents you will require click here.
Another informative site is the Work Permits Kazakhstan website. Do not delay as the Visa process can take several weeks.
