Lifestyle

Timor-Leste is one of the younger nations in the world. It has a rugged mountainous terrain, perfect for the adventurous hiker, replete with hills, ocean beaches, waterfalls and wildlife. Thankfully for the western expat, navigation and shopping tend not to be too complicated because English is commonly spoken throughout the country, particularly by young people. The country is also very tolerant of all religions. Still, according the US State Department, foreigners need to be careful in Timor-Leste and exercise caution when in public places. Also, the infrastructure – roads and bridges – tend to be in disrepair due to years of neglect.

Cost of living

Surprisingly, Timor-Leste is not as inexpensive as a western expat might initially surmise. In fact, according to Xpatulator.com’s July 2016 analysis, the cost of living in Timor-Leste is actually higher than the international average. Such goods and services as housing accommodations and furnishings, Internet, groceries and restaurants are all pricey. Still, one can find good details on various products in Timor-Leste, and clothing and transport tend to be very affordable. The expats is encouraged to negotiate a fair compensation package that is aligned to living costs.

Climate

Climate

Timor-Leste’s climate is affected by the West Pacific Monsoon, which is driven by large differences in temperature between the land and the ocean. It moves north to mainland Asia during the Southern Hemisphere winter and south to Australia in the Southern Hemisphere summer. Its seasonal arrival usually brings a switch from very dry to very wet conditions. The normal south-easterly trade winds in Dili are replaced by westerly winds from the monsoon onset until the end of the monsoon season.
