Lifestyle

Lifestyle

While Croatia is most certainly an extraordinary place on Earth, not all is ideal in this Eastern European vacation destination. The visa process can be difficult, government bureaucrats tend to be stunningly indifferent to expat needs and deadlines and second hand smoke is ubiquitous. Still, there is much to embrace in this small country, including the Adriatic Sea (with its beaches, islands and glorious rocky coastline), gorgeous countryside, an endless stream of charming towns and hamlets, World Heritage Sights (including the Medieval city of Dubrovnik), fine restaurants and outdoor cafes. The country is also easy to navigate, safe and English speakers are not hard to find.

Cost of Living

Cost of living

Happily, this vacation land called Croatia is not hard on the expat budget. According to Xpatulator.com’s July 2016 report, the cost of living in Croatia is below the international average. Indeed, most price of most goods and services tend to be quite reasonable including housing accommodations and furnishings, transport, Internet plans, groceries and alcohol. The western expat in Croatia should be able to both live comfortably and save a fair amount of money.

Visa Restrictions

Visa Restrictions

If you are a European Union National you have the entitlement to work in any European Union member country without needing to obtain a work permit. The only exception to this is if you are planning to work in Croatia where some restrictions can apply. However you should still investigate the consequences of working and the effect this will have on your benefits (health insurance, maternity/paternity, pensions, occupational accidents and diseases, death grants, unemployment, early retirement, family benefits), and the implications of where and how much tax you pay. The European Union offers this Tax advise at its Your Europe website. Once you have been in an EU country for more than 3 months you will be required to register your residence and obtain a residency permit.

If you are not a European Union National then you will require a work permit. The requirements for this often differ depending on your Nationality. For the latest up to date information for entry please visit  Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs website.
