Cambodia offers the adventure seeking international expat an exotic experience. While it is certainly modernizing by western standards, this gritty Asian environment is not for the faint of heart. It is certainly less safe than most expat home countries and the threat of terror is greater. Still, its towns, cities, beaches and mountains provide ample opportunity for fun and exploring and most locals know some English (which makes navigating and retail shopping fairly simple). Also, Phnom Penh offers a fairly cosmopolitan experience with cafes, malls and cinemas.

Cost of Living

Cost of living

Residing in Cambodia is cheap. Indeed, according to Xpatulator’s July 2016 report, the cost of living in Cambodia is significantly lower than the international average. This becomes apparent when purchasing a variety of goods and services such as housing accommodations and furnishings, healthcare, transport, clothing, restaurant meals and alcohol. Groceries and retail recreational activities are reasonable as well. The only pricey item appears to be Internet service. Still, if the teaching expatriate negotiates a reasonable compensation package with their international school, he or she should be able to not only live at a comfortable standard but put some money away for future use as well.
