Leopardfish  Country Guide

Latvia is becoming more popular with expats because of its beautiful natural terrain full of seemingly infinite acres of forests, inland lakes and stunning coastline. In addition, Riga, it’s capital, not only provides the expat a high quality cosmopolitan life (inclusive of great malls, restaurants, chic coffee houses and nightlife), but is also full Medieval buildings. In deed, its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Expats will also find the country to be relatively easy on practical matters such as navigation and purchasing retail. While many older adults do not speak English, many young people do. Nevertheless, most are helpful to visiting internationals.

Cost of Living

Cost of living

Latvia is a good place for the western budget. Indeed, according to’s July 2016 report, the cost of living in Latvia is well below the international average. Given the the country’s natural assets and high quality of life, this is good news to the teaching expat who lands an international teaching job here. The lower costs in Latvia become apparent when purchasing any number of goods and services such as housing accommodations, transport, clothing, groceries and restaurant meals, alcohol, Internet plans and healthcare. Expats should be able to live comfortably and save money here.

Visa Restrictions

Visa Restrictions

If you are a European Union National you have the entitlement to work in any European Union member country without needing to obtain a work permit. The only exception to this is if you are planning to work in Croatia where some restrictions can apply. However you should still investigate the consequences of working and the effect this will have on your benefits (health insurance, maternity/paternity, pensions, occupational accidents and diseases, death grants, unemployment, early retirement, family benefits), and the implications of where and how much tax you pay. The European Union offers this Tax advise at its Your Europe website. Once you have been in an EU country for more than 3 months you will be required to register your residence and obtain a residency permit.

If you are not a European Union National then you will require a work permit. The requirements for this often differ depending on your Nationality. For the latest up to date information for entry please visit Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs  website.
