According to the Better Life Index published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Italy struggles on a number of well-being indicators including subjective well-being and environmental quality. That said, Italy has much to offer the expat including innumerable ruins and artifacts from antiquity; breathtaking Renaissance paintings, sculptures and churches; high culture and the arts; cosmopolitan urbanity; world renown cuisine and wines; beautiful green and hilly landscapes dotted with charming hamlets and a stunning Mediterranean coastline. It is hard to imagine a bored expatriate in Italy with nothing to do.

Cost of Living

Cost of living

According to Xpatulator’s July 2016 report, the cost of living in Italy is about at the international average. However, this can be very misleading because living costs significantly fluctuate dependent on whether you live in the south or north. The north is much more expensive than the south and the cities are much more pricey than the smaller towns and rural areas. The expatriate is encouraged to research the living expenses of the particular Italian location in which they would like to move.

The Italian climate varies considerably and has three climatic regions north central and south, with the north being generally colder and wetter than the south with winter snow.

The central part of Italy has a more consistently milder climate with  smaller difference in temperature.  Summer temperatures in central Italy can range  between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. In the southern part and the Islands the winters are mild with the Spring and autumn more like the summer temperatures of the north and central Italy.

Visa Restrictions

Visa Restrictions

If you are a European Union National you have the entitlement to work in any European Union member country without needing to obtain a work permit. The only exception to this is if you are planning to work in Croatia where some restrictions can apply. However you should still investigate the consequences of working and the effect this will have on your benefits (health insurance, maternity/paternity, pensions, occupational accidents and diseases, death grants, unemployment, early retirement, family benefits), and the implications of where and how much tax you pay. The European Union offers this Tax advise at its Your Europe website. Once you have been in an EU country for more than 3 months you will be required to register your residence and obtain a residency permit.

If you are not a European Union National then you will require a work permit. The requirements for this often differ depending on your Nationality. For the latest up to date information for entry please visit Italian Farnesina visa website.
