Leopardfish  Country Guide

The western expat will never lack in cool things to see and do while living in the United Kingdom. This island nation provides just about anything that an international visitor may want, with one giant exception: a tropical sunny environment. For the historian, it offers Stonehenge, the Tower of London, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, the British Museum as well as many other museums, castles and ruins scattered throughout the UK. For the performing arts lovers, it offers Shakespeare and Marlow, a seemingly innumerable number of theaters in and outside of London and thousands of music clubs and venues (1,500 in London alone). Indeed, all of UK’s cities are cosmopolitan bastions of culture and are regularly animated with seasonal and topical festivals and fairs as well as full of cafes, shops, sports and athletic clubs, well-manicured parks and fine restaurants. There is also much to do for those who love sports and nature, whether it be playing in the sea or on land or attending professional athletic events or races. For the expat with a generous disposable income, the United Kingdom is truly a gift that keeps on giving.

Cost of Living

Cost of living

While the United Kingdom is generally a more expansive option for the western expatriate, expenses vary greatly and are dependent upon the city, the town, the region and the country. Irregardless,’s July 2016 report conveys that, overall, the cost of living in the United Kingdom is higher than the international average. This becomes apparent when one purchases any number of goods and services such as household accommodations, transport, restaurant meals, personal care items and clothing. On the other hand, a number of items can bought quite reasonably in the UK like Internet plans, furniture, appliances, groceries, alcohol and retail entertainment and recreation. Assuming the western expatriate teacher is able to negotiation a fair remuneration from his or her international school employer, he or she should be able to live comfortably in the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom has a temperate climate, with plentiful rainfall all year round. The temperature varies with the seasons but seldom drops below -10 degrees Celsius (14.0° Fahrenheit) or rises above 35 degrees Celsius (95° Fahrenheit). The prevailing wind is from the southwest, bearing frequent spells of mild and wet weather from the Atlantic Ocean. Eastern parts are most sheltered from this wind and are therefore the driest. Atlantic currents, warmed by the Gulf Stream, bring mild winters, especially in the west, where winters are wet. Summers are warmest in the south east of England, being closest to the European mainland, and coolest in the north. Snowfall can occur in winter and early spring.

Visa Restrictions

Visa Restrictions

If you are a European Union National you have the entitlement to work in any European Union member country without needing to obtain a work permit. The only exception to this is if you are planning to work in Croatia where some restrictions can apply. However you should still investigate the consequences of working and the effect this will have on your benefits (health insurance, maternity/paternity, pensions, occupational accidents and diseases, death grants, unemployment, early retirement, family benefits), and the implications of where and how much tax you pay. The European Union offers this Tax advise at its Your Europe website. Once you have been in an EU country for more than 3 months you will be required to register your residence and obtain a residency permit.

If you are not a European Union National then you will require a work permit. The requirements for this often differ depending on your Nationality. For the latest up to date information for entry please visit Visa  & Immigration  website.
