According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s annual Better Life Index, the quality of life in Slovenia is a mixed bag. While personal security and environmental quality are better than average, subjective well-being appears to be lagging. Of course, this study can be misleading. After all, Slovenia is frequently referred to as the jewel of Central Europe and for good reason. The country’s natural landscape is breathtaking. Alpine mountains shape its terrain and dense forests and glacial lakes carpet much of its interior. Of course, Slovenia also boasts a stunning 47 kilometer coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Without question, this is a place for the outdoorsy expat who likes to explore and play in nature. The capitol city Ljubljana is also charming and full of nice cafes and shops. Slovenia is also safe and most locals speak fluent English. Internationals find it easy to navigate and shop retail.

Cost of Living

Cost of living

Residing in Slovenia is not bad on the western expatriate’s budget. Indeed, according to Xpatulator’s July 2016 report, the cost of living in Slovenia is below the international average. This becomes apparent when one purchases any number of goods and services in Slovenia such as a housing accommodation, transport, healthcare, an Internet plan, groceries and alcohol. Still, some items are more pricey such as restaurant meals, hotels and retail recreational opportunities. Still, assuming that a teaching expat negotiates a fair remuneration with his or her new international school employer, he or she should be able to both live comfortably in Slovenia (fully exploiting all the wonderful things that it has to offer) as well as save some money.

Visa Restrictions

Visa Restrictions

If you are a European Union National you have the entitlement to work in any European Union member country without needing to obtain a work permit. The only exception to this is if you are planning to work in Croatia where some restrictions can apply. However you should still investigate the consequences of working and the effect this will have on your benefits (health insurance, maternity/paternity, pensions, occupational accidents and diseases, death grants, unemployment, early retirement, family benefits), and the implications of where and how much tax you pay. The European Union offers this Tax advise at its Your Europe website. Once you have been in an EU country for more than 3 months you will be required to register your residence and obtain a residency permit.

If you are not a European Union National then you will require a work permit. The requirements for this often differ depending on your Nationality. For the latest up to date information for entry please visit the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs  website.
