According to the Better Life Index annually published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development ( OECD), while Greece ranks above average in the overall health of its population, it lags behind its neighbors in subjective well being, environmental quality and social connections. Even worse, the consultant group Mercer recently concluded that Athens offers a worse quality of life than any other city in Western Europe. Still, Greece has much to offer the international expatriate. Beautiful beaches along the Mediterranean, exotic islands, delicious cuisine and ruins dating back to antiquity. Greece is also a fairly free, open and safe society to live in. Navigation and buying retail also tend to be generally uncomplicated to the expat given that a high percentage of the Greek population know at least some English. Read more…

Cost of Living

Cost of living

Compared to other Western European countries, Greece is a less expensive location. Indeed, according to Xpatulator.com’s July 2016 analysis, the cost of living in Greece is less than the international average. This became evident when purchasing a number of goods and services such as housing accommodations and furnishings, healthcare, groceries and alcohol. Climate

Climate

Greece can be broadly divided into two seasons, cold and rainy from October till March and warm and dry from April to September. In this Mediterranean climate the summers being dry and hot often relieved by cool breezes with temperatures reaching a possible 40 degrees Celsius especially in the Islands and coastal areas. Winters are mild in the south but much colder in the mountainous north, where it is not uncommon to see snow and temperatures plummeting to well below zero.

Visa Restrictions

Visa Restrictions

If you are a European Union National you have the entitlement to work in any European Union member country without needing to obtain a work permit. The only exception to this is if you are planning to work in Croatia where some restrictions can apply. However you should still investigate the consequences of working and the effect this will have on your benefits (health insurance, maternity/paternity, pensions, occupational accidents and diseases, death grants, unemployment, early retirement, family benefits), and the implications of where and how much tax you pay. The European Union offers this Tax advise at its Your Europe website. Once you have been in an EU country for more than 3 months you will be required to register your residence and obtain a residency permit.

If you are not a European Union National then you will require a work permit. The requirements for this often differ depending on your Nationality. For the latest up to date information for entry please visit Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
