Lifestyle

Belgium does well in a number of areas according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Belgium residents receive better housing, are wealthier, possess more subjective well-being and are more socially connected than most others in the world. These indicators as well as a culture of good food, recreational sport, leisure and culture all result in a fairly good quality of life in Belgium for the international expat. In addition, Belgium is full of great scenery, Medieval ruins, significant World War 1 and 2 sites and is a convenient platform for travel for Western Europe. Of course, while Belgium certainly has a history of public safety, it has been recently compromised by terrorism and minority unrest in Brussels. Read more…

Cost of Living

The good quality of life in Belgium comes at a high cost. Indeed, according to Xpatulator.com’s July 2016 report, the cost of living in Belgium significantly exceeds the international average. This is becomes evident when one purchases a number of goods and services in Belgium such as groceries, restaurant meals, retail recreational activities, Internet plans, clothing, furniture and appliances. Surprisingly, however, household accommodations tend to be much more reasonable in Belgium in comparison with their neighbors.

Climate

Belgium experiences a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. The weather remains mild all year round with average highs of 23 degrees Celsius in the summer (June to August) and average lows of 1 degree Celsius in the winter (December to February). During the winter months the country can be subject to stronger winds than in any other season. Snow is rare due to the mild winters, though there is plenty of rainfall that is spread pretty evenly across the year. Belgium receives slightly higher rainfall than the UK. Find out more…

Visa Restrictions

If you are a European Union National you have the entitlement to work in any European Union member country without needing to obtain a work permit. The only exception to this is if you are planning to work in Croatia where some restrictions can apply. However you should still investigate the consequences of working and the effect this will have on your benefits (health insurance, maternity/paternity, pensions, occupational accidents and diseases, death grants, unemployment, early retirement, family benefits), and the implications of where and how much tax you pay. The European Union offers this Tax advise at its Your Europe website. Once you have been in an EU country for more than 3 months you will be required to register your residence and obtain a residency permit.

If you are not a European Union National then you will require a work permit. The requirements for this often differ depending on your Nationality. For the latest up to date information for entry please visit Kingdom of Belgium Foreign Affairs website.
