While Benin is certainly one of the safer locations in West Africa (with the exception of its border with Nigeria), it is not known for its western comforts. Indeed, Benin’s economy is underdeveloped and its people reliant on subsistence agriculture. Also, unless English speaking expats are able to converse in French (which is the official language) they may find it tricky to do basic commerce in Benin since so few speak English.
Benin hosts both Christianity and Islam as well as a number of indigenous religions. People of all religious persuasions are generally tolerated and free to exercise their faith.
